Peripeteia of the Female Rose and Peony
This one of a kind hat is a dichotomy of two worlds. Set atop a pill box are elements that tell the story of Chinese women and their advancement in society. Hair traditionally had great importance in defining a woman’s social status as they were previously oppressed by the three obediences to Confucianism: obey your father before marriage (未嫁从父); obey your husband when married (既嫁从夫), and obey your sons in widowhood (夫死从子).
The draping on the pillbox is inspired by the hair of the Tang Dynasty in China. The ornate hair shape is decorated with horsehair and a Chinese traditional button to represent reform, and cultural advancement.
The knot in specific is a good luck charm that signifies a momentous event and is meant to symbolize long life without setbacks. Together, embroidered roses and peonies in Chinese art symbolize eternal spring (longevity), wealth, and honour.
