About Yap Sister Studio
YAP SISTER represents my journey to reconnect with my family and culture, preserve traditional crafts, and celebrate traditional Asian everyday wear.
Our Story
Like many hyphen-asians, my family focused on integrating into a new culture while retaining certain elements of our Chinese heritage, such as celebrating holidays, enjoying traditional food, and watching kung fu movies. However, my family didn't pass down traditional folktales or arts. It wasn't until I spent years working as an urban planner that I realized how disconnected I was from my Chinese roots and felt a strong urge to reconnect with my culture.
YAP SISTER is committed to the following:
Storytelling: Each YAP SISTER piece embodies storytelling through its use of symbolism, materials, techniques, and traditional crafts such as silk embroidery and Chinese knots.
Representation: We celebrate traditional Asian headwear, highlighting its cultural significance.
Slow Fashion: Every YAP SISTER item is handcrafted, employing traditional techniques and designs to ensure our pieces are both timeless and respectful of heritage.
Made for You
To ensure each piece fits you perfectly, each piece is made to measure. We also design custom pieces that tell your story. Let’s work together to build something that is perfectly yours.
The maker
Carrie Yap, the youngest of the Yap sisters, grew up in a family of accomplished artists and sought a craft that was uniquely her own. With a talent for meticulous, detailed work, she trained under Anya Caliendo in New York before launching her own creative practice, YAP SISTER. Carrie has also studied in the UK and Singapore, enriching her expertise. Her work blends traditional couture techniques with cultural elements such as silk embroidery, Chinese knots, and Ronghua. Committed to ethical practices, she ensures that all materials are responsibly sourced and every stitch is meticulously sewn by hand.
